How to refresh your curls in 3 easy steps

During the week, there are mornings when our hair doesn't look its best. Even after a good weekend treatment, our hair loses its moisture and we want it to have a bit of a lift. What happened and what to do about it?

Let me start by reassuring you that water loss is normal and natural. Now, let's see how we can reactivate our curls without having to go through the whole weekend process again.

We will unpack the mechanics in 3 simple steps.

1 Dampen

By spraying a little water on your hair, you rehydrate the curls at first, but you also reactivate the products you have in your hair. Most of the products we use to moisturise our hair are water based, that's the first item on the ingredient list. By adding a little bit of water, you're giving a second life to the moisturising products you've applied over the weekend.
If you are on day 1 after your treatment, it is possible that just this moistening step, simply with water, is enough to refresh your curls. Otherwise you can move on to step 2.

2 Moisturise

The further away from the day of the skincare routine, the less sufficient step 1 will be. This is because the moisturising agents will have partially evaporated, so you will need to add more moisturising agents to replace those that have deserted.

For this you can use a Moisturizing Spray and/or a leave-in conditioner according to the texture and needs of your hair.

Although it's not a rule of thumb, the thicker your hair, the thicker the moisturiser you'll need.

Apply the Moisturizing Spray and/or the leave-in conditioner on your hair, and make sure to "scrunch" the hair. Scrunching the hair means scrunching the hair in the palm of your hand. The scrunching technique has two main functions. The first is to shape the curl and the second is to get the product into the hair fibre.

Be careful! This step is crucial, it is where 80% of the reactivation of your curls takes place.

Shea butter, as well as other butters (no matter how pure and natural they may be) are not moisturising products. This is a mistake that we often see, which means that the desired results are not always achieved.

At this stage, you have already completed or almost completed your "curl refresh". The next step is not compulsory but is highly recommended, especially if you are on day 4, 5 or 6.

3 Sealing

To seal means to close something tightly, to fix it firmly with a substance. So far what we have done is to add moisturizing agents to our hair. The sealing step is to "lock" these moisturizers into the hair fiber. For this we will need a fatty substance.

This is where oils and butters come in. By applying a little serum or hair oil, you'll be sure to add shine and seal in moisture without weighing down your curls. If, on the other hand, your hair is greedy and you want your curls to be more relaxed, a butter or pomade will do the trick.

It's perfectly normal for water to evaporate from your hair over time. By sleeping with a satin cap, or a satin pillow, you can ensure that your moisture lasts as long as possible, and save time refreshing your curls in the morning.

Here's how to refresh your curls in minutes during the week. The further away you are from your treatment session, the more moisturizing products you'll need to reapply. The more time you take to do your moisturiser on the weekend, the more time you'll save during the week to refresh your curls.
